■ ISSO Yukihiro Profile

一噌幸弘(ISSO Yukihiro)

Noh-gaku Isso-ryu Fue-kata
( Noh-kan -Japanese Noh Flute- player of the Isso school of Noh music)

Born in Tokyo in 1964.
Since his first appearance on the stage at the age of nine, he has been performing as a Noh-gaku instrumentalist Fue-kata on classic Noh theatre productions. Since 1991, in addition to his principal profession, he has been presiding over his series of independent concerts Wo-hi-ya-ri, which is widely recognized by its attempt to put his own fresh interpretation on the music with the classical Noh music base.

In his music world, both classic and contemporary music simultaneously coexist and there is absolutely no need for any translation. Therefore his music is certainly unlike ordinary ones simply grafting contemporary music onto classic one. His musical expression is modernistic and has great capability to break any barriers of genres.

As an improvisational artist, he has performed with musicians in various genres from Japan and abroad, moreover, with performing artists, Butoh performers, dancers, flower arrangement artists, and so on. The music developing and creating a unique world based on his single whistle like a well-sharpened knife is highly expected as it has boundless potentialities.

Besides Noh-kan, he plays several flutes of both Japan and the West such as Shinobue, Dengakubue which was invented by himself, recorder, gemshorn, etc.. In 1981 the All-Japan Recorder Concours hosted by Asahi Newspaper awarded him a prize of the most excellent performer.

His works include
Tokyo Darumagaeru (1990)
Vier Tiere (1993) which is a live recording with a German free jazz player, Peter Brotzmann
Leeyari (2001)
Fu,Fu,Fu,/ISSO Yukihiro Band SHIRASE Live (2006)
